Born in Hyderabad to Bengali parents, Sushmita Sen is a former beauty queen and Miss Universe. Sushmita studied English and journalism in school, but decided to go into modelling in 1994 after winning the Femina Miss India contest, beating out the beautiful Aishwarya Rai for first place. That same year, she won the Miss Universe pageant that was held in Manila, the Philippines. After her victory, Sushmita became an actress, first starring in Dastak and then the Tamil movie Ratchagan, which was a huge hit. Two years later, she made international waves in Biwi No. 1, winning her a Best Supporting Actress award from Filmfare. She continued to receive rave reviews for her performances in films such as Aankhen and Main Hoon Na. Sushmita Sen is purportedly in the running to portray Benazir Bhutto in film.
